THE WALKWAY around Mary Cairncross Park is less than two kilometres, but it took me over five hours to get around it. Led by a local ornithologist my eyes were opened to the vast diversity of wildlife in the forest.
I was amazed with the number of nests near the trail. I generally hike trails quickly missing out on the wildlife and their interaction with the rainforests they live in. Although the forest was parched by the current drought, the birds kept the forest well and truly alive. Not only did I see a number of different species of birds, there was a small wallaby and a large carpet snake climbing a tree near the trail.
In this shot a golden whistler searches the foliage of a tree for small insects for its breakfast.
