A NIGHT after the first quarter, the moon makes an appearance through the clearing alto stratus cloud.
The craters appear obvious along the surface where the sun is rising. Particularly obvious is the crater Copernicus with its left side brightly lit and its right side in deep shadow. The dark area of the Sea of Tranquility is off to the right of the crater. The large dark plains have been sheltered from most asteroid impacts thanks to the moon having been tidally locked with Earth for much of its 4.51 billion year history.
