GOOD afternoon. It is just after lunch now. It is quite a steady misty rain forming with quite a lot of wind blowing off the sea. It is quite a contrast to what is has been in past days. I think the storm that has been making its way across the Drake Passage has finally reached us. I think today it will only get up to 11 degrees which is still fairly warm for this time of year. I am guessing this would be a westerly but tomorrow we are expecting it to turn to the south and only get a high of about six degrees.
Today is obviuosly a break from my travels. Yesterday one big tour finished and tomorrow another one starts. Tomorrow I start heading away from the sub polar climate down here. Anyway I've spent most of the day sitting in the hotel room just resting and relaxing and sorting through my gear. Otherwise I did do a little walk up to the supermarket.
This is actually the first supermarket I've visited since going to a Safeway supermarket in Washington D.C. in October last year. So that was quite momentous going to a supermarket with everything written and spoken in Spanish but that wasn't a hindrance. Anyway that was my first supermarket visit this year. I get my food delivered at home, so don't need to go to the supermarket there. That was only about a kilometre from here so really today has been a day of inactivity and I've taken about 20 photos and unless it significantly clears to a sunset like we got last night, I don't think I'll be doing any more today. Today is a day off relaxing.
I have found that whilst doing a very long journey it is always good to have one or two days off every so often every couple of weeks just to relax. You need to do that when travelling and doing activities day after day after day. You do get really worn out after a while, so I do like to have a day off every few weeks. Obviously having just spent two weeks down the Antarctic, today's very well timed for a day off. I'll also have another day off at the end of my next tour which will be going up to Santiago. So I'll just make the most of it today.
Well it's almost sunset and as you can see it is raining steadily and actually the wind has died down a little bit. It was blowing quite strong before. So I think the storm has come over the passage and hit hard, so it's nice to be sheltered here. It's also fortunate to be happening in a time between the two tours when the weather packs in. Fingers crossed it is supposed to be starting to clear later tonight or tomorrow morning. Maybe I'll be able to get out again before the briefing with the next tour group late tomorrow afternoon. Otherwise hopefully it will clear before we start heading out travelling again. But in the mean time I'll call it a night and I'll see you tomorrow.
