Well hello everyone. Today I'm coming from the Gold Coast right at Surfer's Paradise. I am checking out the aftermath of Cyclone Alfred which came through about a week ago. There was a week or two of massive swells here up to seven or eight metres and the beach has eroded as you can see. Before the cyclone the beach used to go down a very gentle slope from here and the water would start where those waves are now breaking way out there. A huge amount of sand has eroded away not just here, but all along the coast from the middle of New South Wales to way up beyond the Sunshine Coast. There's been a huge amount of erosion.
I've just come to check it out. It's about a week on from the storm now. The waves are still quite big, but nothing compared to what they were during the storm. It's amazing to see how much of the sand has washed away. It's going to take a few years for all the sand to come back but as you can see there's people on the beach anyway. It was quite a big cyclone at catagory 2 but it quickly dissipated into a low pressure system when it crossed over Moreton Island. It was a very slow moving system so a lot of swell was generated. Inland there was quite a lot of flooding. The mountains behind here got up to 900 millimetres and further north around my area got a couple of hundred millimetres and a lot of wind knocked down a lot of trees causing a lot of power outages.
I know my place had 63 hours with no power, but apart from that no damage at all, just a few trees down, but not on my property. All the trees coming down left huge areas without power. I think most of the damage happened down here along the coast where it was exposed as you can see there was a lot of sand that got washed away. Anyway I'll leave you here today. Thanks for joining me. Ciao for now.
