Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey departs the Shorncliffe Pier heading across to Cabbage Tree Creek which I follow upstream before entering the Boondall Wetlands. Upon completing both trails through the wetlands, I head to Nudgee Beach to complete another walkway before following Kedron Brook upstream following the Jim Soorley bike trail to as far as the now abandoned Toombul Shopping Centre from where I follow the roads through suburbia until reaching the Brisbane River near the Gateway Bridge.

Today's Journey
Returning to Shorncliffe Pier, I watch the first light of dawn before continuing around the Shorncliffe Peninsula towards the Brisbane River which this leg will be following. |
Reaching the mouth of Cabbage Tree Creek, I watch the sun rising over Moreton Island in the distance across the bay. |
Heading upstream I enter Boondall Wetlands where paths and boardwalks along the Billai Dha-gun circuit cross the delicate wetland vegetation. |
Upon completing the circuit, I follow the main sealed pathway for about twelve kilometres across the wetlands passing through the wetland forest and crossing bridges over the tidal streams. |
Reaching the end of the trail, I follow the path to Nudgee Beach where I follow the trail along Nudgee Creek to its mouth before heading across to the mouth of Kedron Brook. |
From Nudgee Beach I follow Kedron Brook upstream along the Jim Soorley Bikeway with Brisbane Airport across the tidal stream. There is little civilisation here in these swampy wetlands too flood prone to build on. |
The path eventually crosses under the Gateway and Southern Cross motorways as it continues upstream. |
Upon reaching the tidal limit of Kedron Brook, I look across to the Toombul Shopping Centre now abandoned awaiting demolition following the floods earlier in the year causing extensive damage here. |
From the old shopping centre, I follow footpaths across several suburbs to bypass the airport. Obviously there's no coastal track around the outside of the airport so I have to cut across the suburbs to get to the Brisbane River. |
I reach the Brisbane River a little upstream of the Gateway Bridge in time to watch the sun setting directly behind the city centre. |
