Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey departs the Shorncliffe Pier heading across to Cabbage Tree Creek which I follow upstream before entering the Boondall Wetlands. Upon completing both trails through the wetlands, I head to Nudgee Beach to complete another walkway before following Kedron Brook upstream following the Jim Soorley bike trail to as far as the now abandoned Toombul Shopping Centre from where I follow the roads through suburbia until reaching the Brisbane River near the Gateway Bridge.
Distance hiked today: 30.6km

Today's Journey
At first light I start heading upstream along the Brisbane River, passing the cruise ship terminal and following the new Lores Bonney Riverwalk alongside Kingsford Smith Drive heading around the bluff in Hamilton. |
Upon reaching Breakfast Creek, I cross the bridge and head around the peninsula to the walkway continuing upstream towards the city centre, passing many new apartment buildings. |
The trail passes numerous historic areas of this once commercial and industrial area of New Farm from where local produce was shipped around the world. The old wharves have been replaced with the landscaped walkway and most of the industry has been replaced with apartment towers. |
Once past New Farm Park and Merthyr Park, I follow the floating New Farm Riverwalk passing under Wilson Outlook where I began this trek 46 days ago. I could stop here, but continue upstream to complete a relatively short circuit around the Brisbane River. |
Once passed under the Storey Bridge, I continue following the City Reach Boardwalk under the enormous high rises of Brisbane City, following the same walkway as I did in the rainy dawn 46 days ago. |
Once I've passed the buildings, I head into the Gardens Point Botanical gardens, walking through the rainforest that once covered what is now the city centre. |
Once around Gardens Point, I follow the new Bicentennial Bikeway which has just opened even though it is still under construction as part of a huge development project on this side of the city. |
Upon reaching the end of the new track, I head into the very busy Queen Street Mall, following the first track the original European settlers cut through the rainforest. Much of the building facades of the late 1800s lines either side of the paved mall with the glass buildings of the modern high rises towering high overhead. |
With most of the afternoon to spare, I follow a path around the city centre. |
I return to Victoria Bridge along the river to watch the sunset before a large thunderstorm rolls in over the city. |
