Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey crosses back to the southside of the Brisbane River and continues heading downstream passing numerous suburbs and parks but mostly keeping close to the river until I arrive at Westend for the sunset and explore Southbank in the evening. From there I cross the Storey Bridge to complete the northern circuit where I started from at Wilson Outlook.

Today's Journey
I start the final day of this leg and the northern circuit by watching the sun rising from the Jack Pesch Bridge before setting off along the south bank of the river towards the city. |
Following several kilometres of pathway, I reach an old power station now long dismantled with the area now a large sports ground and high rise apartment towers. |
I continue following the river downstream alternating between walking paths, footpaths through suburbia, and the Brisbane River cycle loop. |
The tide is full when I reach the Eleanor Schonnel Bridge heading aross the river to the University of Queensland. I continue past the bridge staying on the south side of the river. |
From the bridge, the trail alternates between parkland and busy inner suburb streets winding my route towards Westend, where I return to the river and continue following it downstream. |
Eventually I reach Southbank, passing the Kirilpa Bridge just after sunset and following the boardwalk along the river. |
The sky darkens revealing the brightly lit city with its high rises towering to ninety stories high and more high rises rising into the sky. |
Southbank is very much alive tonight with markets and performances entertaining the crowds who have gathered here. This is the busiest part of the trek so far. |
From Southbank, I continue following the path downstream, passing Kangaroo Point Cliffs, once a quarry to extract the Triassic tuff to build many of the oldest buildings in the city. Now the cliffs are used for recreational rock climbing. I climb the cliffs along a steep stairway carved into the rock before crossing the Storey Bridge. |
Once across the bridge, I walk the remaining two hundred metres to Wilson Outlook, from where I had started this trek of the northern circuit 52 days ago. |
